• 1st stop

  Chiesa di San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore

  Our first stop sits inside the Chiesa di San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore, known as the Sistine Chapel of Milan for the frescoes that cover almost every wall. We take time to read the cycles painted for the nuns who lived here, and to connect the art with the first tastings of the day, because in Milan the table has always kept company with beauty.

  Roman Circus

  The remains of the Roman Circus show where Mediolanum once gathered for chariot races, with brickwork and towers still standing between the buildings of the modern city. We walk around the site and follow the shape of the ancient arena, a quiet reminder that the streets we have just crossed hold more than two thousand years of history.

• 3rd stop

  L.O.V.E. Statue

  In Piazza Affari, the heart of Milanese finance, we stop under the L.O.V.E. statue by Maurizio Cattelan, a marble salute that turns into something quite different. The gesture still divides the city, and it gives us an easy way into the conversation about work, money, and the irony that Milan reserves for its own institutions.

  Rovine del Palazzo Imperiale

  Between the modern buildings we find the Rovine del Palazzo Imperiale, the remains of the palace that served the Roman governors of Mediolanum. We look at the brick foundations and follow the shape of the halls where imperial business was conducted, a quiet stop that ties the food of the day to the centuries when Milan was an imperial capital.

  Corso Magenta

  Corso Magenta is one of the streets where Milan still feels like a working city, with historic buildings standing beside modern shop windows and offices. We walk it with the rhythm of a neighborhood errand, stopping for the savory bites of the route and for a look at the courtyards and facades that survived the rebuilding of the twentieth century.

  Duomo's Square

  Piazza del Duomo gathers the cathedral, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, and the Teatro alla Scala within a short walk, and we use the square as our open-air dining room for the next tastings. We look at the marble spires and taste the street food that Milanese families pick up between errands and work.

  Galleria Vittorio Emanuele

  We step into the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, the glass-roofed arcade that has connected Piazza del Duomo and Piazza della Scala since the nineteenth century. Under the iron and glass vault we pass the shop windows, the mosaic floors, and the cafes that have kept the city's habit of a quick coffee and a conversation intact, with one more tasting to keep us company.

  Piazza della Scala e Teatro alla Scala

  Piazza della Scala opens in front of the Teatro alla Scala, the opera house that has shaped Milan's idea of itself for more than two centuries. We stop to look at the facade and to talk about first nights, composers, and the audience that still dresses for the season, while the food of the day takes a step back and the cultural appetite of the city takes the stage.

  Piazza dei Mercanti

  Piazza dei Mercanti was the commercial and civic heart of medieval Milan, framed by the Palazzo della Ragione, the Loggia degli Osii, and the Casa dei Panigarola. We close the walk here, with the last bites of the route and the story of a square that once hosted markets, proclamations, and the daily business of the city.
